When Club Drugs Stop Being Fun
(NAPS)-Across the country, teens and young adults enjoy all-night dance parties known as "raves" and increasingly encounter more than just music. Dangerous substances known collectively as club drugs-including Ecstasy, GHB, and Rohypnol-are gaining popularity. These drugs aren't "fun drugs."
Young people want us to believe that raves are just about dancing and socializing. But the truth is that some teens are attracted to dance parties and clubs because of the readily available “club drugs” present at these events.
And while teens think club drugs, such as Ecstasy, GHB and Rohypnol, are harmless fun, studies show the following negative effects of club drugs:
- Hallucinations
- Paranoia
- Amnesia
- Death
Certain club drugs are also called “date rape drugs” b ecause they are colorless, tasteless and odorless, making it easy for people to slip into drinks.

The Most Popular Club Drugs
Ecstasy is a stimulant and a hallucinogen, also known by the slang terms "X," "Adam " and "MDMA." . Young people are attracted to Ecstasy because it improves their mood and gives them energy to party all night , but chronic abuse of Ecstasy can damage the user’s memory and the brain's ability to think and regulate emotion .
Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is another common club drug. Also known as "G," "Liquid Ecstasy " or "Georgia Home Boy" , GHB is known to relax the user, but its sedative effects may also result in coma or death.
Most people have heard of the date rape drug, “roofies,” also known by the brand name Rohypnol. A tasteless and odorless drug, Rohypnol may cause individuals to forget what happened while under the influence of the drug. Other effects of Rohypnol include upset stomach, low blood pressure, drowsiness, dizziness and confusion .
Ketamine is an anesthetic, more commonly known by the slang terms "Special K" or "K." In small doses, ketamine can affect the user’s memory, attention span and ability to learn . At higher doses, ketamine can cause serious breathing problems, delirium, amnesia, high blood pressure and depression.
Methamphetamine, a drug that is often made in home laboratories with varying degrees of purity, is also called "Speed," "Ice," "Chalk," and "Meth.". Methamphetamine use can cause heart problems, memory loss, violence and psychotic behavior.
LSD, or "Acid,"– is a powerful hallucinogen that can cause insomnia, numbness, weakness, nausea, increased heart rate, sweating and "flashbacks." Depending on the amount taken, where the drug is used and the user's personality, individuals may have a “high” from LSD or severe lows, or a “bad trip.”.
Experimenting with club drugs, even just once, can result in serious health problems. These drugs are unpredictable and addictive.
